Year 5 | 11+ Mid-Year Assessment
What is the assessment for?
The Year 5 11+ Mid-Year Assessment is designed to check whether your child is on track to achieve success in the 11+ examination in September.
Taken halfway through the academic year, the assessment covers all topics taught so far in Year 5 and provides an accurate measure of understanding, retention, and progress. It helps identify strengths as well as areas that require further support, allowing learning to be targeted effectively.
The results are used to make informed predictions about which grammar and selective schools your child may be able to qualify for, giving parents clear guidance and confidence in their child’s preparation.

Is this a mock exam?
No, this assessment is not classed as a mock exam. At this stage in Year 5, children have not yet covered all areas of the 11+ syllabus.
The purpose of the Mid-Year Assessment is to evaluate progress based on the topics taught so far, rather than to test full exam readiness. It provides an important checkpoint to identify strengths and areas for development while there is still time to make meaningful improvements.
I recommend sitting 11+ mock exams from May onwards, once all aspects of the 11+ syllabus have been covered. This ensures that mock exams are a true reflection of exam conditions and overall readiness. Mrs B mock exam dates yet to be announced.

What will the assessment cover?
The assessment is designed to reflect the structure of the real 11+ exam and will cover all four key areas:
-
Mathematics
-
English
-
Non-Verbal Reasoning
-
Verbal Reasoning
All questions are based on topics that have been taught up to this point in Year 5, ensuring the assessment is age-appropriate while still providing a realistic introduction to the demands of the 11+ exam.

What is the format of the assessment?
The assessment is designed to closely reflect the format of the real 11+ exam. It will be taken in a multiple-choice format, using a separate question booklet and a separate multiple-choice answer sheet.
There will be two papers, with a short break in between.
For many children, this will be their first experience of using a multiple-choice answer sheet in a test setting. To ensure they feel confident and comfortable, clear guidance will be given beforehand, and the assessment will be conducted in a calm, supportive, and relaxed environment.
What happens after the assessment?
Following the assessment, you will receive a detailed report via email outlining your child’s performance. The report will include overall results, a breakdown by subject area, and ranking within the cohort to provide useful context.
For Mrs B students, a one-to-one consultation will also be offered to parents to discuss the results in detail. This meeting will cover strengths, areas for improvement, and recommended next steps to support your child’s 11+ preparation.
